“Sign Language” is an ongoing photo project by Marc Shur, showing several American vintage signs. The eye-catching typography and flashy colors go particularly well with the Instagram technique Shur uses for his photography.

It is likely you have heard about this project of building a new city from scratch to test new urban technologies, but no people will be living there. In fact, we first heard about it some months ago (I wrote some paragraphs linking this with my memories from Dead cities and other tales, by Mike Davis, in which he depicts the construction of a german town in Utah to test the destruction potential of city centres aerial bombing).

Let´s better concentrate on other approaches such as living labs, user experience or any other that helps us to take citizens from the begining to conceptualise, test, improve and own technologies. Let´s better concentrate on trying to make technologies make sense in the everyday life in cities, taking first steps of research to the streets. I am sure it will be a more suitable and succesful strategy to conduct urban research and technology deployment.

Madrid Spain based artist collective Boa Mistura recently gave a small corner of Brazil one very colorful and meaningful typographic makeover. Working with the inhabitants, including the children of Brasilândia Vila, a poor suburb on the outskirts of São Paulo, the team took the narrow streets and covered them with vibrent, colorful paint, leaving only the beautiful words beleza, amor, doçura, firmeza and orgulho (beauty, love, sweetness, firmness and pride) painted on the walls. The bold white typography is drawn in perspective down the narrow corridors, revealing itself to passerby for only a moment as they walk past the one location where the lines merge into the form of words.
